You can record a popular song but if the song was written after 1922 it is likely protected by copyright and you need to obtain permission to use the song.

You most likely want to have any original song copyrighted.  If nothing else use the free, Creative Commons copyright.  

INSTRUMENTS
What shape Is Your Equipment In?

Do they need new strings, alignment, things tightened so they don't rattle, new tubes? Do all your cords and connections sound good?

 

Do You Have Access To The Music Content You'll Need?

Are you going to play or sing everything? Do you have additional musicians selected?  If there will be additional material do you have the loops, midi instruments or backing tracks you need?  Will you need to obtain outside help?
